The Facility
Your choice of a facility for
elective plastic surgery is an important decision. Let us help you
make it an informed one.
Some
patients choose an ambulatory surgery facility because of its personalized
care, greater privacy, and cost savings, while many patients find the
pleasant setting it provides them and their families the most
attractive feature. Others choose ambulatory surgery because it
eliminates the overnight hospital stay and allows a shorter recovery
period without the additional expense.
All of our surgical procedures are performed in our fully staffed
and accredited ambulatory surgical suite in
McLean, Virginia. You will
arrive to and leave from the facility on the same day of your
procedure. Extremely high standards for equipment, medications, safety
and personnel have been established to insure the finest and safest
facility possible for our patients.
The Surgical Suite meets the
highest level of accreditation (AAAAPSF Level C) and is subject to
periodical reviews and renewal. The
PSA surgical suite has qualified
for this renewal at every examination since the facility was opened in
1985.

The Staff
The
standards of our PSA team far exceed accreditation requirements.
Twelve registered nurses (R.N.'s) with nursing assistants make up the
highly skilled surgical and recovery team. Most staff members have
been associated with PSA for 20 years or more. Several members of the
staff have had surgical procedures and are capable of giving advice
and support, not only from a professional but a personal point of view
as well.
The Initial Consultation
Your experience begins with a personal consultation with our
Dr. Magassy. You should come to your
consultation prepared to discuss your concerns and goals frankly, as
that is the only way you can benefit from
Dr. Magassy's expertise and
experience. And while Dr. Magassy
will be happy to offer his suggestions as
to how to achieve your goals, only you know what you want.
After you've discussed what you would
like to achieve, Dr. Magassy will outline
recommendations. The suggested procedures, the risks and
benefits, as well as the pricing will be clearly described in layman's
English and/or Spanish. After you have completed your
consultation, you can take your first concrete steps toward realizing
your goals by scheduling your procedure.

Anesthesia
Anesthesia for plastic surgical procedures requires a high level of
skill and experience. Each member of the anesthesia team clearly meets
that requirement having more that 25 years experience in every facet
of anesthesia practice from pediatric anesthesia to anesthesia for
open heart surgery. Our staff of Certified Registered Nurse
Anesthetists (CRNA's) has worked closely together for many years to
develop anesthesia techniques specifically designed for patients
undergoing plastic surgery in an ambulatory facility.
At
PSA there is one charge for the
surgical procedure, one charge for the anesthesia, and one charge for
the facility. Because there is only one charge for the facility, you
know exactly what the costs for your surgery will be. Generally, the
cost of ambulatory facilities are considerably less than similar
services provided in a hospital.

Follow-Up Care
One of our nurses will call after your procedure to check on your
recovery and answer any questions you may have. In addition, a doctor
is always on-call for urgent questions.
The most common questions asked of
Dr. Magassy have to do with the period following
surgery. Will it hurt? How much? What kind of care do I need
afterwards? How long before I can resume my regular routine?
Most people feel quite well within 24
to 48 hours following their procedure. However, bruising and swelling
are common. It can be minimized by the use of ice packs (you'll
receive specific instructions), but most people plan to take it easy
for at least a few days to allow the swelling to subside.
The most difficult questions to
answer are those about pain, because there simply are no objective
measurements. However, it's safe to say that while most people do
experience some discomfort and pain after their procedure, it's less
than they were worried about. Many report no significant discomfort at
all.

Coverage
While most insurance plans do not offer coverage for cosmetic or
elective surgery, other reconstructive procedures may be covered. Our
Patient Care Coordinator will be able to help you with the questions
you have about your insurance coverage. Some insurance companies will
allow reimbursement for surgery performed in the accredited facilities
of doctors because the accreditation assures that the facility meets
recognized standards of quality. The cost-saving benefits of
ambulatory facilities have been favorably viewed by state and federal
health agencies.
Each case should be evaluated
individually. Ambulatory surgery may or may not be appropriate for
you. Your medical history and your doctor will decide if you are a
good candidate for surgery in an ambulatory setting.
